General average is the maritime principle of apportionment of the costs of preventing or remedying maritime losses among the parties who would benefit.
A New Jason clause is a contractual provision that allows a carrier to collect general average even if the loss is caused by negligence, so long as the carrier provides a seaworthy ship.
