Jim Markwith is the co-founder and managing partner of Symons Markwith LLP’s Seattle, and Washington, DC area offices.  His clients range from start-ups to large technology companies representing a range of industries and offerings, including computer software, healthcare IT, data analytics, standards development organizations, and other emerging technologies and services.  Jim also serves as general counsel to the CommonWell Health Alliance, a non-profit industry alliance promoting national electronic healthcare record standards and infrastructure in the U.S.

His practice focuses on technology and intellectual property transactions, commercial agreements, helping start-ups establish and grow their businesses, supporting technology and IT based product development, HIPAA compliance, and Open Source software use and compliance.

Prior to private practice he served as Senior Vice President and Chief IP Counsel for Allscripts Healthcare, and held senior in-house legal positions with Microsoft, GE Healthcare IT and Adobe Systems.  He is an Adjunct Professor at the Santa Clara University School of Law, where he teaches for the Entrepreneurs’ Law Clinic (the “ELC”). The ELC provides services to the local Silicon Valley startup community by delivering quality legal services to entrepreneurs through the use of second-and third- year law students.
